This is the latest film from Jeff Nichols, so you can expect dramatic visuals and lots of motorbike chrome, slicked back hair, and 1960s style. Starring Austin Butler and Jodie Comer, THE BIKERIDERS is based on photographer Danny Lyon’s 1968 book inspired by the four years he spent with a Chicago motorbike club.
It's a story of being in America in the 1960s, of freedom and is a vivid dramatization of the early days of the motorbike culture in the US
The main characters are Lyon, who’s conducting interviews for his book and a woman named Kathy (Jodie Comer). Kathy, also based on a real person, sees Benny (Austin Butler) in a smoky room and falls in love, even though she’s not enamoured with the bikers.
Butler as Benny is our new James Dean and Johnny, who is Benny’s best friend, played by Tom Hardy, is our new Marlon Brando. The Vandals start off as a group that likes riding and talking about motorbikes, but develop into something darker. Kathy watches on, concerned about what’s happening as the spirit of the gang evolves beyond what some of its members expect or realise. With some Vietnam vets joining the gang it becomes more than a bunch of straightforward bike fanatics and soon develops into the field of serious crime.
How different members of the group react to this, how it impacts Benny’s relationship with Kathy, and how superbly the zeitgeist is captured as the cool dude, leather clad masculinity oozes makes for a visual treat worth seeing.
