On the Sea

A fisherman struggling to keep his business afloat is forced to grapple with his hidden desires when he meets a stranger in town looking for work.

Set in a remote fishing community in North Wales, the film follows Jack, a mussel harvester who expects his son to continue the family trade. Tensions arise when his son resists this expectation, and the arrival of a new deckhand further complicates relationships within the community. As personal and familial dynamics unfold, the story explores themes of identity, desire, and belonging.

We saw this film and booked it for Keswick as it's so well written and acted and is akin to Brokeback Mountain and God's Own Country, and if you liked either of those great films we think, like us, you'll also appreciate this one.

Film critic Nikki Baughan summed it up as “A slow-burn attraction upends a traditional life in UK writer/director Walsh’s Welsh coast drama, whose narrative restraint belies its emotional impact. The film combines astute observational writing and evocative cinematography with powerful performances from Barry Ward and Lorne MacFadyen to create a low-key yet vivid portrait of a man coming to terms with himself.”
