500 Miles
A poetic and heart-warming family road movie with Bill Nighy.
Directed by Morgan Matthews and adapted from Mark Lowery's novel Charlie and Me.
We follow 16-year-old Finn and his energetic younger brother Charlie, who live in Sheffield. After overhearing their parents arguing about a bitter separation and looming custody battle, the boys fear they will be split up. At the crack of dawn, they take drastic action and run away to be with their eccentric, beloved grandfather, John, whom they have been forbidden from contacting since a mysterious family feud erupted the previous summer.
But John is an arduous 500-mile journey away across land and sea in Dingle on the rugged west coast of Ireland. Travelling by trains, buses, and coaches on a tight budget, the brothers must rely on their wits and the kindness of strangers. Along the way, they cross paths with Cáit, a free-spirited street musician running away from her own troubles. Cáit steps in as an unlikely guardian angel, assisting the boys when they face logistical mishaps on the road.
As the boys edge closer to Ireland, their desperate parents spiral between panic and regret, forcing the fractured family to finally confront the painful loss and secrets that drove them apart. The film blends humor, adventure, and heartbreak, building toward a powerful, unexpected plot twist upon their arrival.
